Introducing Workstations

This week at school we are introducing workstations.  Workstations (also known as centers) allow students to practice skills and strategies that have been previously taught.Workstation #1 - ABC - We practiced matching foam uppercase and lowercase letters to an ABC mat.  We then pulled out the letters from our names and made them on the table.
Workstation #2 - Listening - We listened to the story K is for Kissing a Cool Kangaroo (an alphabet book.)  We learned to press the green button for play, the red button for stop, and the yellow button to rewind the tape to listen again, or get the station ready for the next group.
Workstation #3 - Writing - We used dry erase boards and markers to practice writing our names, words we know, and friends names.  We learned that we can borrow names from our word wall to help us!
Workstation #4 - Playdoh - This week we had free exploration of our Playdoh.  We practiced rolling, cutting, and shaping, as well as how to keep the floor clean and put everything away so that our Playdoh doesn't dry out.
Workstation #5 - Making Words - Using magnetic letters and boards we made our own names and then borrowed names from our word wall.  Did you know that names of friends and family are some of the first words children learn to read?
Workstation #6 - Reading - We practiced reading in our reading corner.  We could choose to read three different ways:  read the words, read the pictures, or retell a story!
As we become more independent in our workstations, Mrs. Alldred will use this time to meet with small groups for literacy instruction!
